What Is a Meniscus Tear?

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in your knee that acts like a cushion between the bones. Each knee has two menisci — one on the inside and one on the outside — and they help absorb shock and keep your knee stable.

A meniscus tear is a common knee injury. It can happen suddenly during sports, twisting movements, or squatting. It can also occur slowly over time as the knee ages and the cartilage wears down.

Common Symptoms

Pain in the knee, especially when twisting or turning

Swelling or stiffness

A catching or locking feeling in the knee

Difficulty fully straightening the leg

A sense that the knee is giving way

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the tear, as well as your age and activity level.

  • Mild tears may heal with rest, ice, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications.
  • More serious tears may require a minimally invasive surgery called arthroscopy, where the torn part is either trimmed or repaired.

Our goal is to relieve your pain and restore the normal function of your knee. If you think you may have a meniscus tear, please don’t hesitate to see us. Early treatment can help prevent long-term problems.
